Banshee Buyers Guide
Everything to look out for!

Get out there and start looking!
Welcome, fellow motorsports enthusiasts! Today, we're going to talk about one of the most iconic ATVs in the industry: the Yamaha Banshee. As a passionate rider and Banshee owner myself, I'm excited to share with you all the things you need to know before owning your first one.
First off, let's talk about the history of the Banshee. Yamaha made a bold move by continuing to innovate on two-stroke engines when its competitors were transitioning to four-stroke engines. The result was a line of efficient quad ATVs that changed the game. The initial version, the Banshee 350, was produced in Japan from 1987 to 2012, and sold in the United States from 1987 to 2006. Unfortunately, new Yamaha Banshees are no longer produced, but that doesn't mean you can't still get your hands on one.
The Banshee is known for its impressive speed, performance, and other compelling features, making it a popular choice for off-road enthusiasts. If you're in the market for a Banshee, you can find used ones from a variety of retailers and online listings websites. But before you make your purchase, there are a few things you should consider. So, buckle up and let's dive into the world of Yamaha Banshees!
Banshee Buyer's Guide
Now that we've covered the history of the Yamaha Banshee, let's dive into our buyer's guide. If you're considering purchasing a Banshee, it's important to understand its specifications and unique features.
First and foremost, the Banshee is known for its high power and quality engine. Its 350cc, 2-stroke, liquid-cooled, 2-cylinder engine combined with a kickstarting system and CDI ignition allows for impressive top speeds of 75 mph or more when well-maintained. However, it's important to note that the Banshee doesn't have a reverse gear or electric starter, which can be a setback for some riders.
Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for a Banshee is that due to its popularity, there are many modified versions floating around the internet. Some enthusiasts or ATV "experts" have modified the vehicle to achieve even higher speeds, with some reaching up to 85+ mph. It's important to do your research and make sure you're getting a Banshee that meets your needs and hasn't been over-tuned. (like that's even possible lol)
In terms of style, the Yamaha Banshee comes in various color options. It has an old-fashioned, even primitive aesthetic with sharp lines and an aggressive look that fits well with sports racers and fast ATVs even today.
Overall, the Yamaha Banshee is a powerful and unique ATV that has stood the test of time. Just make sure to consider its specs and potential modifications before making your purchase. Happy riding!
Info to Keep in Mind While Purchasing
Now that we've covered the specs and history of the Yamaha Banshee, let's dive into some factors you should keep in mind when considering a purchase.
First and foremost, it's important to know that all Banshees require you to premix your gas because the ATV doesn't contain oil injectors. While this isn't a difficult task, it is something you'll need to do every time you fill up your bike.
Additionally, the stock air filter in a Yamaha Banshee is known to intake dirt, which can accelerate internal wear and tear. It's best practice to switch to an aftermarket air filter or check if a used Banshee already has one installed before buying.
Another factor to consider is that the Banshee isn't known for its suspension or stability (until you install extended rear axle and extended control arms to make everything wider, that takes care of the "handling issue"), so it takes some experience to handle the unit to its maximum effect. Finally, it's important to note that the ATV doesn't come equipped with a reverse gear. You'll need to reverse direction using your feet.
If none of these potential downsides deter you, the Yamaha Banshee ATV is an excellent choice for racing, sports performance, and general recreational riding. Just make sure you're prepared for the unique features and requirements of this powerhouse ATV. Happy riding!
Where to Buy??
Where is the best places to buy used Banshee ATVs since they are no longer produced by major manufacturers?
One option is to visit dealerships that sell used ATVs and other vehicles (good luck with this route... very unlikely to find one here). This allows you to inspect the Banshee in person before making a purchase. If you don't live near a dealership, online retailers and listing sites like Craigslist and ATV trader are great alternatives as well as Facebook Marketplace (I have also heard of them being posted on OfferUp but have not personally looked there). These sites offer a wider range of Banshees to choose from.
When selecting a Banshee, it's best to choose the newest one possible since it will have likely experienced less wear and tear than older ATVs. It's also important to note that there are no other versions of the Banshee to choose from aside from the Banshee 350. However, you may come across "special edition" Banshees that have different colors or aesthetic changes.
Overall, take your time and do your research to find a Banshee that suits your needs and budget. Happy shopping!
Banshee This and That
Current models have a seat height of 31.5 inches and ground clearance of 5.3 inches. They also come equipped with headlights, brake lights, and a fuel capacity of 3.2 gallons. When it comes to aesthetics, used Yamaha Banshees can be found in various colors, including white, blue, black, red, and more.
Keep in mind that when purchasing a used Banshee, it's important to thoroughly inspect the ATV and ask the seller any questions you may have. You'll want to ensure that the Banshee has been well-maintained and that any necessary repairs have been made. Receiving a title for your new ride, depending on the year, will most likely be difficult.. Just make sure you get a Bill of sale and you can get it registered at your Local BMV with hardly any issues depending on which state you live in. (I live in Indiana and have had no issues presenting a bill of sale to title and register my machines)
Overall, the Yamaha Banshee 350 is an excellent choice for those looking for a high-performance sports quad, and with some research, you can find a quality used model to suit your needs. Happy hunting!
