Choosing the BEST Banshee for YOU
Every year ever made.
Banshees were made from 1987-2012
From 1987-2006 they were available for purchase in the USA
From 1987-2008 they were available for purchase in Canada
From 1987-2012 they were available for purchase in Japan and Australia
From 1987-1990 Banshees were made with J-Arms for the "upper control arm". In 1991 Yamaha started making Banshees with A-Arms for the "upper control arms". [picture examples below]
J-arm and A-arm bikes have several differences, including the upper arms, swing arm carrier, brakes, and rear sprocket/hub. The swing arm carrier of J-arm bikes is skinnier by fractions of an inch, and the brakes are different. J-arm bikes use a 4 bolt pattern to hold the rear sprocket, while A-arm bikes use 6 bolts. The J-arm frame is shaped like a "J" that goes around the front of the shock, while the A-arm has an upper "A" that goes in front and behind the shock.
While some people may talk negatively about J-arm frames, there is actually nothing wrong with them. In fact, J-arm bikes are 14lbs lighter than A-arm bikes and handle slightly better due to less sprung weight. Plus, they have a cool and trendy look. However, it's been alleged that J-arm bikes wear out the arm bushings a little faster. Additionally, foot guards (heel guards) were added in 1990.
Now that you know the basics, choosing your Banshee is up to you! Only a few Minor chassis changes have been made in the 25 years of production, and from 1991-2012 virtually nothing has changed at all except colors! But I must warn you, do your homework before spending $3,000-$5,000 on a decent running machine. You can get burnt if you don't know what to look out for! GOOD LUCK!
